Organize Your Home Office for Better Productivity

July 24, 2018

NU Homes homes in New Orleans LA are spacious and offer excellent opportunities for a home office. With more people working in flexible environments that allow for working from home on a regular basis, there’s a growing demand for home office organization and layout that is both comfortable and efficient. The following tips will help you organize your home office so that you’re productive enough to take advantage of the perks of working from home.

While it may seem easy enough to set up in the dining room or at the kitchen island, particularly if you don’t generate a lot of paperwork, it’s better to have a designated space that provides privacy and avoids distractions.

Ideally, your office is in one of the spare rooms in your home that is airy, well-lit naturally, and properly ventilated. If you do need to set up your office in your garage, it is important to finish the space completely, with proper heating and cooling, light, as well as finished walls, and padding and carpeting. Your office needs to be physically comfortable, no matter where it’s located.

A space of your own is particularly important if you do generate paperwork and need to keep files, documents, or other physical items related to your work. As a result, you’ll need proper storage, as well as the appropriate space to work comfortably. Consider floating shelves, wall-mounted cabinets, or floor-to-ceiling shelving units that provide storage without taking up excess floor space.

It’s also important to make sure you have appropriate lighting. You may need task lights for certain work, so it’s important to have a desk lamp. You also need enough ambient light for the whole room, which may include overhead lights, particularly during shorter days in the winter. Make sure you have natural sunlight, as well. Having your desk near a window provides needed light, but also helps you feel better throughout the day. Being able to look outside can help you think more clearly and avoid low moods that can develop in windowless spaces.

Your office should include pictures or other items that express your interests and personality and should be arranged with proper furnishings, not random bits and pieces that aren’t cohesive. A space that looks cold and temporary won’t inspire you to work.

You also need a space that is quiet and free of too many distractions. Carpet or rugs will absorb some of the noise, as will pictures on the walls and furniture. Bare walls create unnecessary echoes. The walls themselves should be a neutral, calm color such as cream, pale yellow, sage green, or light blue. You want to avoid overstimulation, while still including features that create inspiration.

Even if you only use your home office a few days a week, it is important to have an organized, dedicated space where you feel comfortable and aren’t easily distracted. With the spacious homes in New Orleans LA available from NU Homes Homes, it should be easy enough to create your own personal workspace that helps you focus, but also lets you enjoy the comforts of working from home.
